Sagmeister

It was Sagmeister's dying lily which i used as inspiration for my vows booklet.  I love Sagmeisters experimentation with typography.

This typography has been hand created in the environment.  Sagmeister is experimental with typography and likes to push boundaries. Here he has taken a collection of photos of typography he has created and arranged them into a sentence/phrase. These photos are like manipulated versions of things that you can actually find in nature/in the environment.

This poster is using hand rendered typography. It has actually been carved into the body of sagmeister by his assistant. The typography is sans serif and is generally in uppercase. There is one word which is in script: ‘style’. As the typography has been hand created, there isn't really a consistency in the tracking, the leading and with the baseline.
This poster for lou reed reminds me of the one above. The typography has been written over the top of the photography. Similarly to the other poster, the typography has no consistency with tracking, leading and baseline

Words mean more than what is set down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with deeper meaning

Message in a bottle

As there is probably not much point in trying the whole message in a bottle thing, Id somehow like to incorporate the idea into my project somehow... maybe a bottle wall?  I want something in which people can put their heart in a bottle.

Facebook...

I am really struggling with creating an alter ego facebook account... it wont let me!?!  So... thinking thinking thinking... possibly twitter?

Providing I follow these guidelines, I should be posing no threat to the environment when releasing balloons off into the air.

Computer-mediated communication

Computer-mediated communication is the communications between two or more computers for example emails and IM.  It has more recently been applied to other text based interaction such as text messaging (see wikiiiii).

Army job loss e-mails

This is an article about a recent event in which some army members have been sacked via email.

UV- hidden messages

This could be a way of writing what people actually mean over the top of what they say?  Maybe I could create posters of messages that people send via text and overlay what they'd have said in person or through a letter which tends to be more personal and meaningful.

Development of communication in humans

Level I. Pre-Intentional Behavior
Behavior is not under the individual's own control, but it reflects his general state (such as comfortable, uncomfortable, hungry or sleepy). Caregivers interpret the individual's state from behaviors such as body movements, facial expressions and sounds. In typically developing children, this stage occurs between 0 and 3 months of age.

Level II. Intentional Behavior
Behavior is under the individual's control, but it is not yet used to communicate intentionally. Caregivers interpret the individual's needs and desires from behaviors such as body movements, facial expressions, vocalizations and eye gaze. In typically developing children, this stage occurs between 3 and 8 months of age.

Level III. Unconventional Communication
INTENTIONAL COMMUNICATION BEGINS HERE, AT LEVEL III
Unconventional pre-symbolic behaviors are used intentionally to communicate. Communicative behaviors are pre-symbolic because they do not involve any sort of symbol; they are unconventional because they are not socially acceptable for us to use as we grow older. Communicative behaviors include body movements, vocalizations, facial expressions and simple gestures (such as tugging on people). In typically developing children, this stage occurs between 6 and 12 months of age.

Level IV. Conventional Communication
Conventional pre-symbolic behaviors are used intentionally to communicate. Communicative behaviors are pre-symbolic because they do not involve any sort of symbol; they are conventional because they are socially acceptable and we continue to use them to accompany our language as we mature. The meanings of some gestures may be unique to the culture in which they are used. Communicative behaviors include pointing, nodding or shaking the head, waving, hugging, and looking from a person to a desired object. Note that many of these gestures (and especially pointing) require good visual skills and may not be useful for individuals with severe vision impairment. Some vocal intonations may also be used at this stage. In typically developing children, this stage occurs between 12 and 18 months of age.

Level V. Concrete Symbols
SYMBOLIC COMMUNICATION STARTS HERE, AT LEVEL V
(symbols represent, or stand for, something else)
Concrete symbols that physically resemble what they represent, are used to communicate. Concrete symbols look like, feel like, move like or sound like what they represent. Concrete symbols include pictures, objects (such as a shoelace to represent shoe), iconic gestures (such as patting a chair to say sit down) and sounds (such as making a buzzing sound to mean bee). Most individuals skip this stage and go directly to Level VI. For some individuals concrete symbols may be the only type of symbol that makes sense to them; for others they may serve as a bridge to using abstract symbols. Typically developing children use concrete symbols in conjunction with gestures and words, generally between 12 and 24 months of age, but not as a separate stage.

Level VI. Abstract Symbols
Abstract symbols such as speech, manual signs, Brailled or printed words are used to communicate. These symbols are abstract because they are NOT physically similar to what they represent. They are used one at a time. In typically developing children, this stage occurs between 12 and 24 months of age.

Level VII. Language
Symbols (concrete or abstract) are combined into two- or three-symbol combinations ('want juice', 'me go out'), according to grammatical rules. The individual understands that the meaning of symbol combinations may differ depending upon how the symbols are ordered. In typically developing children, this stage begins around 24 months of age.

Different experiments

For my experiments I am going to have to design some sort of card containing contact information so that I can gather any information back from the public.  These contact cards could be placed inside of bottles, balloons etc.  I am also going to have to create a new email address so that people can contact me with any feedback.

Things I need to get...
1. Helium tank
2. Biodegradable balloons
3. Bottles
4. New email address
5. Pay as you go phone???
6. Photos from pub toilets
7. UV pen

Sending a message

Proposal by answering machine

This is an example of an important thing being communicated in a possibly inappropriate way.  Something which should be personal and private and said in person has no only been said over the phone but ended up being broadcasted across the entire country.

“Don’t ever forget I love you, I love you so much, I love you with all my heart and I was going to ask you, don’t answer, obviously you can’t answer, but will you marry me? I love you and I’m really sad I didn’t get a chance to speak to you today, but you know I love you, don’t you, I love you with all my heart. I don’t know what to say babes. I can’t wait until you give birth to my baby, my little soldier. I will do everything in my heart and I will try my hardest to fight to protect you … [inaudible].”

Research/Context

For this project I will research into the history of communication including delivery methods (such as carrier pigeon) and tools (such as the typewriter).  I will also look at the history of the document and how companies involved in communication adapted to the changes in technology.  I will look at the previous ways people have expressed themselves and communicated with each other and how, as technology has advanced, the ways in which societies interactions have changed.   Ewan Clayton A History of Learning to Write could be a good source of information for research.
We live in a 24/7, always open culture.  People don’t want to wait a day, a week or even a month for information: they want to know immediately.  This results in a new culture of people who communicate without thinking.  “A study by the AAA discovered that an alarming 46% of teens admitted to being distracted behind the wheel due to texting.” (wikipedia.com)
I’d like to research why people feel the need to express themselves in society and why people like to share every aspect of their lives with other people whom they probably don’t even know socially.

+    “More than 35 million users update their status each day”
+    “More than 3 million photos uploaded to the site each month”

Statement of Intent

In the 600 hours allocated for this module I intend to produce several outcomes based around the theme of communication.  I will divide my time up between research, development work and will dedicate plenty of time nearer the end of the project to actually make up my final pieces.  I would like to experiment and try out some new things that I have never done before.  Under the theme of communication, I am going to explore identity: how the ability to communicate quickly and freely has lead to a change in how people express themselves, and how people project themselves to society.
I first decided that I wanted to look at this subject when I kept reading reports in newspapers and magazines about how the development of technology has lead to a change in the way society communicates with each other: people are being made redundant via email, proposed to via answer phone message, and being told ‘I love you’ via text.  Does this impersonal and unemotional way of communicating really possess the same value to that of face-to-face conversation in today’s society?
Furthermore, just by logging in to a social networking site you can learn an abundance of information about a lot of people (often those who you do not even know socially) within just minutes.  But why are people so keen to share every detail of their personal life online?  It seems more and more common to find trivial matters displayed in a serious context and serious matters sent in trivial ways, for example, a marriage proposal by text.  Does it really mean the same thing?
I think that this project could help me to develop some of my current skills further and to possibly learn some new ones too.  I intend to produce an interesting and thought-provoking piece of design, which will be interactive and original in its approach.

New books!!!! It's turning into an addiction...

Recently I have spent faaaaar too much money on books!!! They are my new love.  The following are all books I have purchased for my FMP (well that's the excuse anyway...)

<3 Postsecret :)  This is a really cool way of collecting information off people... I want to do something like this!!!!

I thought this could come in handy as my project is on communication.  This book is about letters people have sent people about a range of different career rejections, relationship rejections etc...

Again, things people say to each other this time via text.

I decided in order to not confuse myself and everyone else that I would start a new blog just for the FMP.  This will document everything from now til the hand in date in approx 5 and a half months time!?!?!? Agh!!

So heres to another exciting project :)
